If you're in Canada, and you have money invested in a registered account, like an RRSP, TFSA, RESP, or LIRA, then this post is for you.
Why do I want to talk about these? Because I have come across so many people who have Registered Savings accounts, but ultimately have no idea what their money is being invested into. TFSA is an interesting one, because it's a fairly new account (created in 2009), and in my opinion it should have been called a TFIA (Tax Free Investment Account), but I'm sure the government wanted people to use these like a Savings account rather than as Investments for long term growth. But I digress--And will remove my tin foil hat as we continue.
Within these registered accounts, I would say the average person is invested in a Mutual Fund, and most people don't actually fully understand where that money is actually invested, and furthermore what their actual return is. In fact, they don't know that these accounts are most-often underperforming in the market.
But don't worry, I have a better solution for you! You can actually use these accounts to invest in Real Estate. Now, why would you want to do this? Many reasons: you have more say in where your investment goes, you know exactly which asset or project that you're investing in, in fact, you can actually select which asset or project you're investing into, and you can actually negotiate your return - You have full control! The other beautiful thing is that this is going to be secured against a tangible asset, meaning it's going to be secured against the property that you're investing in.
